The Burtons' St. Leonards Society works together with the Hastings Trust, West Marina Society, the Marina Traders and other interest groups, in order to conserve, improve and regenerate the area. St. Leonards is the first purpose-built seaside resort in England, developed by the architects James Burton and his son Decimus from 1828. It has a unique Regency inheritance but is also a thriving modern town (now part of the borough of Hastings & St Leonards). The Society has premises at 36 Marina (available for community groups for a small charge)- open on Saturdays for information, membership forms, sales of books, details of events, talks and guided tours. It is currently engaged in a number of projects including the production of a new information brochure about the locality; the West Lodge project (Heritage Lottery); advising the local Islamic Association on a proposed new mosque and education centre; and, if funding is achieved, the restoration of a small older property using local skills and environmentally friendly materials and methods while retaining character and features, to create a modern home. We are also involved in the detailed consultation process for the development of the West Marina bathing pool site. Members of the Society's management council have professional knowledge of the fields listed below.
