TCR Local Support (Hastings)

Hastings and St. Leonards Credit Union Ltd.
Although Credit Unions are well known and accepted as valuable additions to communities in the north of the British Isles, Ireland and the North American Continent, Hastings & St. Leonards Credit Union was the first Community Credit Union to be established in the South East of England.

Proposed originally by Hastings Borough Council backed by the 1066 Housing Association as a pilot scheme to be limited to individual estates as a basic non exclusive self help project, once a team of volunteers had been gathered together as a steering group, the idea itself progressed from there to all residents of Hastings and St. Leonards then to live or work in Hastings and St. Leonards.

After months of training under the auspices of ABCUL The Association of British Credit Unions Limited the Credit Union was finally registered as a limited company and opened their first office at 41a Cambridge Road, Hastings during July 1999. Able to offer their members secure savings and low cost loans (1% per month on the reducing balance, the Credit Union now has over 240 members and also holds a weekly collection at its satellite centre based in Hollington
